A coffee bar cabinet is a dedicated furniture piece or built-in storage unit that holds your coffee maker, grinder, mugs and beverage supplies in one organized spot, with a countertop to brew on and enclosed storage below. The right one is the cabinet whose width and depth fit both your space and your machine, with doors, drawers or mug hooks for what you keep out of sight.

This guide is part of our coffee bar furniture series. Renting, or short on wall space? A rolling coffee cart may suit you better.

What is a coffee bar cabinet?

It’s a cabinet with one job: giving your coffee routine a home. Most share the same features:

  • A countertop wide enough for a brewer, with room to set down a mug.
  • Enclosed storage behind doors (hinged or sliding barn doors) for beans, filters and backstock.
  • Drawers for stirrers, spoons, napkins and pods.
  • Optional extras such as mug hooks, built-in outlets or LED lighting.

Coffee bar cabinets come freestanding or built-in, in a range of widths and heights, and in finishes from crisp white to rich espresso.

How to choose a coffee bar cabinet (sizing comes first)

Measure your space, list the equipment that will live on top, then pick a style. In that order, because a cabinet that looks right but is too shallow for your machine will frustrate you every morning.

Width and depth: match the cabinet to your machine

Retailers usually sort cabinets by height. This is how the classes break down, with the typical footprint people use them for:

Coffee bar cabinet height classes
Height classTypical heightWhere it fits
SmallUnder 40 inCounter-height coffee stations and corners
Medium40 to 60 inHallways and dining rooms, with a shelf above the top
TallOver 60 in (pantry and hutch units run about 71 to 72 in)Full coffee walls with a microwave shelf

Compact cabinets of about 27 to 31 inches wide suit apartments, hallways and kitchen corners. A typical coffee bar runs 24 to 48 inches wide at a 36-inch counter height.

Storage: doors, drawers, pod drawers and mug hooks

Doors (or sliding barn doors) hide beans, paper filters and extra supplies. Drawers hold the small things that make a counter look cluttered: stirrers, teaspoons, napkins and pods. Some cabinets add a dedicated pod drawer, shelves or glass-front doors, and built-in mug hooks, often four to six.

Extras worth paying for

Built-in AC and USB outlets, LED accent lighting, wine and glass racks, and on taller units a microwave shelf and charging station. In our view the outlet is the extra most worth paying for if your wall socket sits in an awkward place.

Coffee bar cabinet ideas and designs

1. A two-tier cabinet as a compact coffee station

A small cabinet against an empty wall gives you a brew spot, a shelf for cups and a door to hide the clutter. Keep the top for the kettle and the brewer only; everything else goes inside.

2. A painted hutch for a coffee corner

A hutch adds upper storage for mugs and canisters while the counter below holds the brewer. A deep color like this green makes the corner read as a destination, not leftover space.

3. A cabinet with room for a mini fridge

Keeping milk and cold brew next to the machine saves trips across the kitchen. Measure the fridge before choosing the cabinet, and follow the fridge maker’s ventilation clearance.

Frequently asked questions

What is a coffee bar cabinet?

A coffee bar cabinet is a dedicated furniture piece or built-in storage unit that holds your coffee maker, grinder, mugs and supplies in one spot, with a countertop to brew on and enclosed storage below.

How do I choose the right coffee bar cabinet?

Start with the width and depth you have, then list the equipment that will sit on top, then pick a style. A cabinet that fits your machine and your wall beats a prettier one that doesn't.

Can a sideboard or buffet be used as a coffee bar?

Yes. A sideboard gives you a top surface for brewing plus doors and drawers for backstock, which is exactly what a coffee bar cabinet does.
